Located off the United States, Hawaii is amazing by geological activity that gave birth. The islands of Hawaii (Hawaiian Islands) are an archipelago in the North Pacific Ocean, part of the United States of America, they are the 50th state. A north-west of Hawaii is the island of Maui (1 883 km ²), formed by two peninsulas joined by an isthmus, the eastern peninsula is dominated by a huge volcanic cone volcano Haleakala (3 055 meters), while Peninsula West is the Puu Kukui (1 764 meters). To the southwest of Maui is the small uninhabited island of Kahoolawe (115 square km), which is also mountainous, Mt Pu'u Moaulanui (452 meters). A north-west of Maui are the islands of Lanai and Molokai, Lanai (364 sq. km) south presents a volcanic cone, the Lanaihale (1026 meters), while Molokai (673 sq. km) long and narrow, is formed at west by a plateau and east by a mountain, the remains of an ancient volcanic edifice, whose highest point is Mount Kamakou (1 515 meters). A north-west of Molokai is the island of Oahu (1 545 sq km), the economically most important island of the archipelago, where the capital is Honolulu. The island is the result of two volcanic cones, the Wai'anae and Ko'olau, joined by a flat area, the highest peak of the island is Mount Ka'ala (1 220 meters). The island of Kauai (1430 km ²) is located about 170 km northwest of Oahu, the island has many contrasts, its western part is semi-desert, while the Mount Waialeale (1 569 meters) is one of the wettest place on Earth in the center-west of the island is a landscape of canyon, the Waimea Canyon, along the northern coast of the island are spectacular cliffs of Na Pali Coast. The highest mountain on the island is Mount Kawaikini (1598 meters). To the west of the island of Kauai is the island of Niihau, mostly flat, reaching a maximum altitude of 390 meters. The center and north of the archipelago is composed of small volcanic islands and coral atolls (Nihoa, Necker (Mokumanamana), French Frigate Shoals (Mokupapapa), Gardner Pinnacles (Puhahonu), Maro Reef (Nalukakala), Laysan (Kauo) , Lisianski (Papaapoho), Pearl and Hermes Atoll (Holoikauaua), Midway (Pihemanu) Kure (Kanemiloha'i)). Regarding the economy, are highly developed agriculture (sugar cane, pineapples, bananas, coffee, tobacco, rice, tropical fruits), tourism, food processing and canning, fishing. |
